What Epopteia is.
Epopteia is the reading room of Galena House — a place to read the house's books rather than a shop that sells them. It opens warm, it remembers your place, and it makes every copy personal: when a book becomes yours, one word in every chapter turns gold, for you alone.
The short version (for anyone who asks)
A small independent press in a Colorado mountain town built its own reading room, so that its books could be met the way the inn meets its guests — quietly, deliberately, and already warm.

Epopteia opens without a wall. No sign-up gate, no splash, no countdown to a trial. “Come in. It is already warm.”

A Colorado innkeeper built a reading room for his own books
Galena House opens Epopteia, where every copy is woven to its reader — and one word in each chapter turns gold.
FRISCO, COLORADO — [DATE]. Galena House, the literary and hospitality house founded in 2023 by author and innkeeper Avery Lane Maxwell, has opened Epopteia, a reading room built to hold the house's own books.
Epopteia departs from the conventions of digital bookselling in a way that is easy to describe and hard to imitate: it opens without a sign-up wall, it lets a reader read into any book on the shelf before owning it, and it treats a purchase as a signature rather than a licence. When a copy becomes a reader's own, the book is woven to that reader — and one word in every chapter turns gold, for that person alone. No two copies are marked the same way.
“The lamp is lit for you too,” reads the shelf. It is the same sentence the house uses for its guests.
Maxwell keeps an inn in Frisco, Colorado, nine thousand feet up, and writes the way the inn keeps its rooms: slowly, deliberately, so that someone might feel less alone inside them. His first novel, Still, by Design., was the atmosphere. Good Little Innkeeper, arriving at Thanksgiving 2026 into Frisco's Wassail Days, is the reckoning.
The room carries the full apparatus of a serious reader's tool — contents, search, bookmarks, marks and quotation cards, four lighting scenes from day to lamplight to night, adjustable type, line, measure and brightness, a Listen mode, and a Focus mode in which the room goes quiet — but it is framed throughout in the language of hospitality rather than software.
The house is kept, in its own words, by patrons rather than donors. A free threshold called the Letters precedes three seats: the Lamp, the Colophon — which sets a patron's name in the colophon of the next book the house binds — and the Founders' Circle.

This house — the books, the press, the reading room, all of it — is built by one hand and kept alive by its patrons. Not donors: patrons. A seat by the fire, a name in the weave, a place in whatever this becomes.
The threshold
Before any seat, there is a place. Notice when a new book or issue is published, Avery's occasional letter, a spot saved in the Reading Room with your progress and passages, selected complimentary pieces, and an invitation through this door when you're ready. No cost, no password — just a name and an address, kept respectfully.

How to talk about the Circle
- Lead with the house, not the tier. The seat is a consequence of caring about the house — never the opening line.
- Name the free threshold first. The Letters cost nothing and ask nothing; say so plainly before any figure.
- Say patron, seat, key. Not subscriber, tier, plan, or perk.
- Let the Colophon do the work. A name printed in every copy of a book, forever, is the most human thing on offer here — it needs no adjectives.
- Never chase. “Seats exist, and the circle will one day close” is the whole of the urgency the house permits itself.
